Every clinical trial needs clearly defined outcomes.
A primary endpoint is the main outcome the study is designed to evaluate. Secondary endpoints can provide additional information, but they may answer different questions.
Endpoints can include survival, symptoms, laboratory measurements, hospitalisation, developmental outcomes or other measures depending on the research question.
When reading a trial result, one of the most useful questions is therefore simple: what exactly improved, and how was that improvement measured?
