Electroencephalography, usually shortened to EEG, records electrical activity generated by the brain.
In neonatal neurology it can be used as part of the assessment of brain function and suspected seizures. This is important because seizure activity in newborn infants may not always produce obvious outward signs.
EEG findings still need clinical interpretation. A recording is one source of information among examination, medical history, imaging, laboratory testing and other evidence.
Understanding both the usefulness and limitations of EEG helps explain why neurological diagnosis is rarely based on one measurement alone.
